FAQ

I want to learn more about the drop-off bins

How do the drop-off bins work?

We place locked drop-off bins around town. As a subscriber, you collect food scraps at home and bring them to those drop-off bins at your convenience. We arrange for the bins to be collected and taken to O.Park. It's an organic resources recovery centre that converts food waste into biogas (a source of renewable energy similar to natural gas) for electricity generation whilst the residues from the process can be produced as compost for landscaping and agriculture use. You can visit O Park, please check www.opark.gov.hk/ for more details.

Can I drop off my food waste in plastic bags?

No. Please use the certified compostable bags we provided to you during the set-up meeting. It will minimize unpleasant smells and make it easier for the workers handling the food waste.

Can I drop off non-food items like PLA, bamboo toothbrushes, silk floss, etc.?

Sorry, no. O Park cannot distinguish between regular vs. compostable packaging, and removes it all. Please go to "What can be composted"under FAQ (https://www.hkcomposting.com/what-can-be-composted)

Do I have to sign up for a certain length of time?

Our subscriptions are month-to-month. Once you subscribe, it'll automatically renew each month, until you ask us to cancel it. You can ask to cancel anytime. Paid amounts are non-refundable.

Can I get access on more than one mobile phone?

Yes, each household can get access through up to three mobiles because we understand that you may have several people doing 'the drop'. The subscription fees does not increase but we will charge a small incremental fee to set up additional mobiles.

There is no bin in my neighbourhood yet. How can I help?

You could be an ambassador for your neighbourhood. You know your area better than we do, so you could help speed up the process by looking for locations for bins.

  • Bin locations need to be on private property, yet publicly accessible, so the alleys besides/behind businesses are usually best. Look for bin locations without stairs, so the driver can easily pick up/drop off bins.
  • Our bins are the standard 180 litre bins, the same size as the glass recycling bins you see all over town.
  • Bins are picked up every day or every other day, depending on usage.
  • If you know of a good spot, we'd love it, if you could introduce us to that business!
Contact us and we look forward to meeting you!

Can you put a drop-off bin inside my building?

We would need your help convincing your buidling management to allow for a bin to be placed. Each building is managed differently, and we simply don't have the manpower at this time to meet management teams all over town. Contact us, if you've had a conversation with your building, and they're open to the idea.

  • Our bins are the standard 180 litre bins, the same size as the glass recycling bins you see all over town.
  • Bins are picked up 3x per week.
  • We need a minimum number of subscribers to at least cover the logistics cost. That minimum number varies by location but will be around 25-30.

Are all food items acceptable? (The Can/Cannot List)

I'm a business that wants to compost

What is the size of the bin?

It's a standard 180 litre trash bin, just like the glass recycling bins you see all over town.

Can I have a bin without giving access to the community?

Yes, but we may ask you to provide space for a second bin to give the community a convenient place to drop-off their food waste as well.

I'm already a bin subscriber

Other non-food items are currently not accepted but do send us an email about the type of stuff you have. Innocent items like floss could tangle machinery, bamboo toothbrushes usually include nylone (=plastic) bristles, "paper" cups and plates are lined with plastic.
